Imaginesium:

Imaginesium is a mixed-media project from visual artist and designer J. Rayfield (me!)

Over the course of the last 20 years, I have created a prolific body of work that I’ve mostly kept to myself. My pursuits include illustration, painting, collage, digital abstract, geometric art, pattern design, diorama photography, macro photography, neural network (A.I) reimaginings and expansions of my previous works, and fan art.

All I really want to do is rearrange lines, colors, and shapes in new combinations yet unseen.

So I’ve done that. I’ve shared bits and pieces here and there. But I could never find a good way to share it all with everyone.

DeviantArt was useful, but I could never devote enough time to update thoroughly. And I generally figured loading 50+ variant versions of some random design would be frowned upon by the community. So i refrained.

One of my favorite things to do over the years has been to remix and reuse elements from my previous works while creating new art. It gives some of the art in my portfolio an artistic DNA that shows the scale of my overall work as a whole but also with the individual pieces interactions with each other over the years. The new work could be completely removed in visual style from the original. But a small section or element of another work could digitally become an abstraction, a pattern, or a mandala in another series.  If you pay attention, you may spot re-used elements in unexpected places.

Through the years I have created various series of abstracts and designs utilizing my previous artworks and the power of various mobile design apps to tear my artwork to shreds with various filters and effects. My goal was to create as many different versions and variants of my art as possible. I save often and strategically. Whenever I think something looks awesome, I save. That’s the strategy. That’s the moment I care about.

That moment where I decide, “This should exist”.

The closest description I could give is that I consider myself to be an “iterative” artist. I am always trying to change or remix a piece further. Often stripping an image down to a sample element before seemingly starting again in another direction. My joy is in the infinite variations available. Sometimes big changes, sometimes more subtle ones. But, I save them all. Then I might reuse that piece, or an element of it, in future works, if and when the time is right.

In recent years, my main focus has been:

  • My family.

  • Making complicated geometric patterns utilizing elements of my previous works.

  • Using an artificial intelligence to take select pieces of my portfolio and process them against a neural network trained against either my own personal style, or the style of other artistic masters

  • Attempting to organize my portfolio before upload.

  • Posting hundreds of free (and a few ad supported) wallpapers on Zedge mobile app. Just search for "Imaginesium" in the app.

Over the years, I’ve created various products through Redbubble, Society6, Zazzle, and Threadless. I’ve tried to use my rather abstract style to take the “new lines/colors/shapes” mantra to its core by creating merchandise using those elements.

I’ve never really ever expected anything to actually sell, thinking my artistic style to be quite different from what the masses normally want. Mostly, I’m right.

So, I’m always pleasantly surprised whenever I find out some cool ass person out there has looked at one of my pieces and decided... “This should exist”. Until that moment, these products are really just the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal in action.

I just like to use my artwork and design cool shit I think should exist. Whether it ever gets manufactured is up to you. “Eye of the Beholder”, and all that.

I never have any idea what anyone is gonna react to as I post everything. I have no clue what people will like. I made everything for myself, and it’s kinda weird enough letting people see everyrthing. There’s so much of it that the products would never be able to catch up with my portfolio. So I’ve kinda just uploading randomly, based on how dope the products look. It’s worked so far.

I’ll attempt to make it easier to find my stuff here by creating a gallery showcasing the available product lines from all my vendors in one place.

Commissions and showings are currently open.

Well, maybe not showings… There is a fucking pandemic.
